All porcelain crown and information you need to know!

All-porcelain crowns are often described as a "new coat" for teeth, effectively concealing imperfections in shape and color to create an even, brighter smile. They also provide an added layer of protection for teeth that have been damaged.

Today, there are various types of porcelain crowns available, with a range of prices to suit different needs and budgets, offering options for every customer.

What are all porcelain crown?

Porcelain crowns are artificial teeth created from porcelain or alloy materials, crafted to closely match each individual's natural teeth in size, shape, and color.

The crown has a hollow structure, allowing it to fit snugly over the natural tooth’s remaining stump and is securely bonded with dental adhesive.

Once applied, porcelain crowns improve both the appearance and functionality of teeth. Here’s how:

  • Corrects bite issues, including misaligned or protruding teeth.
  • Covers discolored or stained teeth, giving them a brighter, whiter look.
  • Protects teeth that have undergone root canal treatments or are otherwise damaged.
  • Supports restoration solutions like bridges and implants to replace missing teeth.

Additionally, porcelain crowns shield natural teeth from external elements like food, beverages, and bacteria, minimizing the risk of enamel wear and damage.

Structure of all porcelain crowns

A porcelain crown is made up of two primary components: an internal framework and an outer layer of porcelain enamel.

Inner frame

The inner frame is the initial component shaped to match the desired form of the porcelain tooth. It needs to be strong and long-lasting, allowing the porcelain crown to securely attach to the natural tooth stump while withstanding significant chewing pressure.

This frame is commonly crafted from alloy materials or can be made entirely from porcelain.

Outer porcelain layer

The outer porcelain layer envelops the entire inner frame, enhancing the crown's aesthetic appeal once completed. Much like natural tooth enamel, this layer provides protection against bacteria.

Carefully crafted with high precision, the porcelain layer accurately replicates the shape of the tooth in need of restoration.

Additionally, the color options for the porcelain enamel are extensive, ranging from deep shades to light hues, allowing for a seamless match with each customer's original tooth color.

How many types of all-porcelain crowns are there?

Porcelain crowns are classified into two primary types, based on the materials used in the inner structure:

All-Ceramic Crowns

Known for its premium quality, this type of porcelain crown offers exceptional aesthetics and durability. All-ceramic crowns are widely used in various restorations, particularly for full-mouth cases.

True to its name, this crown is crafted entirely from pure ceramic material, without any metal components. This composition brings several distinct advantages, including:
  • Highly biocompatible, causing no irritation within the mouth, making it an ideal option for individuals with metal sensitivities.
  • Has a natural white shade with light-transmitting properties that closely resemble real enamel.
  • Resistant to oxidation, which prevents the appearance of dark gum lines over time.
  • Offers a hardness level 5-6 times that of natural teeth, enabling comfortable eating and drinking without concerns of fractures or cracks.
  • Long-lasting, with a lifespan of up to 20 years when properly maintained.

Due to these numerous benefits, the cost of all-ceramic crowns is generally higher than metal-ceramic options. This group of crowns includes types like Zirconia, Cercon HT, Nacera Pearl, and Nacera 9Max, among others.

Metal-Ceramic Crowns

This was the earliest type of porcelain crown developed, with a long history of use. These crowns feature a metal framework, typically made from alloys such as Ni-Cr-Ti, Ni-Cr, or Cr-Co, coated with an outer layer of colored porcelain.

Metal-ceramic crowns are known for their high durability, providing reliable chewing function. They are also an affordable option, making them a popular choice for many customers.

Since the core of these crowns is metal, their aesthetic appeal is somewhat limited. Over time, exposure to light can cause the color of the crowns to darken, and the gum line may develop a dark tint.

For this reason, metal-ceramic crowns are generally not recommended for front teeth or full-jaw restorations; they are better suited for back molars.

Common types in this group include Ceramco III and Titan metal-ceramic crowns, among others.
